It may be a smart phone, but smart phones are dumb. I paid a lot of money for this phone but it’s not a way into my life. There is no right in the constitution which says if you call someone, you’ll be able to reach that person. It may be a law somewhere which says you have to have a phone, but why? You can’t even exist without a phone, email, an address (which in turn requires utilities), email requires internet access and a phone/tablet/laptop/pc… Do you spot the trend? Don’t get me started on text messages, data, the endless push notifications and don’t forget it’s a phone, so even if you don’t install apps which have ads in them, you’ll still get random phone calls and text messages which are easy as cake to abuse with numbers you can’t verify in any way. Caller ID is a complete joke, which smart phones don’t use, and while there are ways to create verified caller ID for businesses, with a voip.ms line or an app, even you can change your caller ID on a whim!
So what’s the point of all that technology? You need it for a variety of seriously legitimate reasons like emergencies, communication with family… Do you realize even I grew up without a phone? In high school, I was the nerd with a palm pilot… now everyone has a phone with them. I use my phone for phone calls, tethering, and Uber and Lyft because at this point, I can’t afford a car, and while I’m now eligible for my drivers license finally, why even bother except for needing a quick way to get to work? (That’s yet another post I could write.) If smart phones didn’t exist before about 20 years ago and cell phone technology before that was primitive in comparison, how did we live? Even the internet was slower, wifi technology was in development, there was no such thing as a smart TV, yet now, it’s all so commonplace and expected you have to have it to live (you idiot!). Wait a minute, no you don’t! Who said I even have to have an address? I could spend my life in a hostel, and why not?
My life has been nothing but job-hunting for the past year and it’s absolutely insane how recruiters and managers alike will ignore you for not answering a phone call the first time they call. Seriously, if you can’t reach someone, don’t call 4 times in a day, leave a voicemail! My phone is not there for you to call and expect an immediate response. And if that’s how you want it to be, I’m not looking forward to the job! What is wrong with people?
Do not abuse a phone! When phones were new, people shared them. Ever heard of a party line? And even the phone didn’t exist that recently. Oh my god! What DID people do? They communicated in other ways, and waited for a reponse! Now, if you can’t reach someone immediately, you ignore them!
My life is not my phone, and I do not answer phone calls even when I get them from an unknown number even if I’m sitting on my phone (literally). You have plenty of reasons to realize why I don’t trust technology, and why technology is so abused, so why do people have to act so stupid? Give me a break already! Seriously! I’m done!
